San Asensio calls itself the “cradle of clarete”, and once a year it proves it — loudly. The Batalla del Clarete is a proper village festival day where the weapon of choice is wine, sprayed and splashed with agricultural creativity.

Compared with Haro, this often feels more intimate and local: fewer “bucket list” tourists, more neighbourly energy, and a great excuse to explore Rioja Alta at peak summer brightness. Come for the battle, stay for the food and the easygoing village rhythm, and you’ll leave with a Rioja memory that isn’t just “we did the bodegas”.
